IT FLIES

Go Ahead!

What is IT FLIES?

IT Flies is an annual competition held in both the UK and the USA where students from various universities meet and compete against each other with their innovative designs of various flying machines. We use this ambition as a motivating factor that helps us teach the students a huge number of skills in aircraft design, principles and physics of flight, research, technical presentations and other fields. Those hardworking enough to get on the teams sent to the competitions each year have a great track record of success. They always gain a tremendous amount from speaking to the talented test pilots employed to decide the competition winners.

LEARN

Learn the principles of flight and aircraft design in lectures from your fellow members and from our own teaching resources, as well as from books by J. Roskam, D. Raymer, E. Torenbeek et al. And learn it all at your own pace, before you get to it in your academic classes!

DESIGN

Develop your own aircraft from a basic specification, using tools and software such as MATLAB, SolidWorks and MS Excel to perform all the necessary computations. Obtain the required data to produce a full, accurate representation of your aircraft in the simulator.

CREATE

Create your aircraft within the environment of the powerful Excalibur software, which runs the Engineering Flight Simulators, flight-test it in various real-life scenarios and perfect your design.

Merlin MP521

The MP521 simulator comprises of a capsule with a six-degree-of-freedom G-cueing motion system, visual and instrument displays, touch control panels, and hardware flight controls.

Merlin MP520

The MP520 is fitted with a two-axis electric motion system, and a smaller capsule than the MP521 and it is primarily used for preliminary testing of aircraft when preparing for the Competitions.

Merlin MP500

Our two custom MP500s use three large panel displays and two small interactive instrument displays alongside the standard MP500 joystick and throttle to run the latest Excalibur III software.
